First Presbyterian Church is a member of the Living Waters Synod and the
Presbyterian Church USA.
Basically, Presbyterians follow the Reformed theology and believe in
representation of members and ministers in church leadership. To read
more, check out Presbyterian 101.
As for our church, we meet on Sunday
mornings at 8:30 and 11:00 for worship and at 9:30 for Sunday School.
If you come in the door on Spring Street, someone is sure to be nearby to
help you find your way. Our nursery is for children 5 and younger.
During the second service, the children who want to participate in
Children's Church leave the sanctuary after the Time for the Children.
The youth choir practices on Sunday afternoons, followed by a
great time at Youth Group, with dinner provided. Wednesday afternoons
and evenings are busy at First Pres, and Wednesday is a great time for you
to get to know some of the members on a more personal level.
Activities begin for elementary children at 5:00, dinner begins at 5:30, and
classes and choirs are busy throughout the evening. If you show up,
you're sure to find you fit right in.
If you like an older church with a mixture of new and old ideas,
you'll enjoy worshiping with us.
The church was founded on
April 10, 1812, near Murfree Spring in what was to become known as the town
of Murfreesboro. The original church building was erected in what is now
part of the Old City Cemetery on Vine Street and was used during the War
Between the States as a hospital, first by Confederates and then Union
forces. The original building was destroyed. A new building site was chosen
and a building erected in 1867. It was damaged in the 1913 tornado, and
major repairs and design changes were made to the roof and structure. The
work was completed by 1914. The office area and Sunday school rooms were
added in 1959. A new common room with additional classrooms, parlor,
elevator and kitchen was completed in 1998 for $1.6 million. Because the
church is situated two blocks from the city square and courthouse, available
expansion room is limited to the adjacent property on the block. One
adjacent house and lot were purchased in 1995 for the new building built in
1998, and another property was purchased in 2003 and is used as rental
property.
